Chêne centenaire
A large, indistinctly shaped figure moves forward, shifting and distorting as it advances through a landscape of light. Whether a prehistoric monster or a futuristic colossus, this eight-limbed being gradually emerges from the mist after a long journey.
The giantess moves slowly through a metaphorical environment. A song accompanies the beast’s progress as it gradually sheds its skin and its gear, revealing the bodies of two women whose ages cannot be discerned. To the rhythm of ritual dances that summon the ghosts of the past, they unfold a landscape.
With*Chêne Centenaire*, we are crafting a fable, a work of fiction. We are crafting a narrative populated by fantastical and monstrous beings, with post-apocalyptic and possitopic undertones – the opposite, therefore, of dystopian. Conceived as a manifesto, we champion the intertwining of connections, and our attachment to the world, to ecosystems and to species. In this sense, in conceiving it, we draw inspiration from the ‘principles of the Living’. The protagonists are craftswomen, peasant women in the sense that they shape the landscape. They are also connected to the world they inhabit and possess its powers and properties. They are thus capable of triggering climatic events (tornadoes, thunderstorms, gales…) or of transforming themselves to dance as bears, young hares or old wolves.
Through fiction, we construct a story of resonances, in which we are ‘users of the future’, and where another end of the world – in the sense of a new beginning – might be possible.
A choreographic, musical and visual piece for two performers,*Chêne Centenaire* is nomadic and aims to be as adaptable as an epiphytic plant: it can be performed on a theatre stage as well as in a park, a forest or a public square.
