L’Amiral Sénès
The blare of the trumpets still echoes through the space shrouded in twilight. The atmosphere is thick and misty, pierced only by a few patches of light. Perhaps this is a nocturnal, underwater landscape; another Atlantis; a forgotten world; or even a realm where our departed loved ones await our call...
Three shipwrecked, haggard, clumsy figures emerge from the mist, and so begins an odyssey, a naval fantasy, an epic tale of toy soldiers. Jaws snap, legs give way, bodies support one another in their quest to stand upright. They are linked to one another, to their lineage, to the admiral ancestor whom they bring back to life through themselves. Together, they invent the epic memory of an ancestor about whom nothing is known except that a statue bears his likeness.
There is a path: from matter to humanity, from opacity to light, from spectre to flesh, from oblivion to memory. When I was a child, the figure of Admiral Sénès and his statuesque double were a source of fantasies of glory, heroism and naval battles. In creating Admiral Senes, I wish to bring to light the various layers of his ghostly histories, of which each is the sum total; to allow these myths, sedimented deep within our bodies, to resurface – those invisible gestures and dances of which our bodies are the heirs.
