DITTO to the SAND

With DITTO to the Sand, I’m allowing myself to explore a fusion. I’m inviting my children to share a creative space.

Leaving behind solitary wanderings to forge new paths together, as a trio.

Re-enacting the tensions that bind me to them and to my work. And bringing together what I thought could never be combined…

Together we share the same space, in which each of us is busy with our own task.

I’m at work.

I spin for 20 minutes, perhaps longer. I don’t stop; I persevere.

Sometimes, James spins too. He learns by imitation.

I watch them, I ignore them.

They watch me, they ignore me.

I dance, I spin

They apply themselves to their drawings, help one another, talk to each other, move across the space, taking full possession of it. They are visible.

Ditto to the sand is a refuge, a meeting point, a place of sharing and transmission where we can celebrate our connection whilst acknowledging the challenges that come with it.

"Marion Carriau decides to show her sons—and it’s a powerful image. They stick coloured strips onto the stage, then James, the youngest, starts spinning round and round, then Leon starts spinning round his mother, and then they leave her to get on with her work, whilst staying close by. She mimics James’s movement. Marion spins. In the midst of the spiral, she yields nothing to the confusion of the movement. Everything is precise, measured to the millimetre, striving towards that pinnacle where the body becomes an image, almost a kinetic sculpture. It is this very rigour—relentless, almost maniacal—that makes possible this unsettling plasticity of the living.”
